My 101 Things in 1001 days list:

CSS firefox margins

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I recently spent quite a while creating a template for a new site, so was not happy to find that sometimes a large chunk of white space would appear at the top, pushing down my background image and basically distorting the whole look of the page. And it only appeared to be happening in firefox!

Delving into it a little more, I realised it was in some way related to the borders that I would place around div elements during development so that I could easily see their exact positioning (I’m still not quite the CSS whizz, and this really helps me). When I thought I was finished with the layout I removed the borders and lo, the random white space appears!

Skin Bends

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

As a relatively experienced diver (100+ dives), I was greatly disturbed to find my DCI (decompression illness) knowledge shown up on my last scuba diving holiday, especially as the affected diver was actually my mum!

Now all divers should be aware of the common symptoms of DCI. They are, as listed in the PADI open water book (I use PADI as it’s one of the most common training agencies used):

  1. shock
  2. weakness
  3. prolonged fatigue
  4. lightheadedness
  5. dizziness
  6. numbness
  7. tingling
  8. difficulty breathing
  9. varying degrees of joint or limb pain
  10. paralysis
  11. unconsiousness

The PADI rescue diver manual says much the same, though adds in cardiac arrest and nausea.

So we file them away and think ‘Okay, so if ever I come across a diver who has these symptoms, even potentially including myself then I’ll know what to do’.

The reality is somewhat different though. (more…)

Happy 50th Birthday Mini

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Well today is the 50th birthday of that wonderful old car, the mini!

I just mention it here as I believe it should be celebrated, and it also gives me the chance to reminisce about my own first car, my lovely beautiful Red Hot Mini!

As a car it was wonderful to drive, I knew exactly where all the corners of the car were for parking due to it’s excellent all round vision and I could squeeze it through the tiniest gaps. When I was having a bad day there was nothing better than driving down the street and finding another mini driving coming the other way, flashing their lights and waving in greeting. That never failed to cheer me up!

Welcome to loonyblurb.net

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Welcome to my new blogsite, loonyblurb.net, owned by me, loonytoons!

This is the new home for all my random thoughts, ravings, rantings, ponderings and general cerebral wonderings so hopefully over time it will fill up with a collection of entertaining if not interesting things. That said it will mean that I will have to be good and keep posting to it as otherwise it would all be rather pointless but hopefully that won’t be a problem. There might be some really random posts going up though!

So anyway, welcome to my site, come in, sit down have a look around! I am always working to add new content so please do check back now and again.

But without further ado, here is a picture of my dog to complete the welcome (ah bless, isn’t she sweet).
